HIKE ACTIVE VOLCANO ILAMATEPEC AND IZALCO

 

Hiking Ilamatepec volcano, also known as Santa Ana, is a top destination: it is the tallest volcano in El Salvador and one of the most active in the country with beautiful sights to the surrounding volcanoes, lake and valleys with diverse crops.
The massive crater is more than 2,380 meters high. The last eruption of this volcano was just few years ago. Today the volcano has five craters, one inside the other, and a depth of around 300 meters. A from the rim you have a great sight to the sulfuric acid lagoon below.
Along the trail you cross through different environments. From cloud forest to blank plains this volcano is habitat for hundreds of species of ild flora and fauna.

HIKING IN EL IMPOSIBLE NATIONAL PARK

In 5,000 hectares, El Imposible National Park is home to over 400 species of trees. The Ceiba and Ojuste  are a few of the largest and as the park guides will point out many of the plants and trees have medicinal uses.
It is estimated there is between 5,000 and 6,000 species of butterflies. Also armadillos, wild boars, ocelots, white tailed deers, ant eaters and an occasional puma can be spotted in the park.
El Imposible is habitat to a reported 285 species of birds including the magnificent Rey Zope (King Vulture).
The terrain of the park is very steep but has a substantial network of trails that should satisfy any avid hiker.

SAN SALVADOR VOLCANO CRATER HIKE

El Salvador has 23 volcanoes. Some of the make a terrific hike. El Boquerón is the second widest crater in the country and the walk around its rim is a great and pleasant hike, on the Westernmost limit  from San Salvador.
Is a nice hike through cloud forest on an average elevation of 1,830 meters and great views. The terrain is mostly, not to difficult and mostly shaded.

WALTER T. DEINNINGER NATIONAL PARK

This is a coastal forest and National Park with a good circuit of trails for hiking, lookouts. As well natural geological formations, caves, rappel and a fun circuit of high-ropes and buggy rides in the woods. Great for birders, families and nature lovers. From here there’s a short drive to La Libertad beaches, good restaurants, the fish market and surfing spots.

Distance from airport (one way): 28 Km.

Walk length: from 2 to 10 Km.
